Why No Guru Can Cut Your Karma

Many seekers hope a Guru will take their karma away. Siddha Guru Pushkara Purvajna says no one can. What a Guru gives instead is the power to untie it yourself.

It is one of the most common hopes people bring to a spiritual teacher: please take this away. A difficult pattern, a family burden, a run of troubles that seems to have no cause. Guruji’s answer is honest, and in the end more hopeful than a promise would be.

We cannot touch someone else’s karma. That is dangerous.

Nothing happens without a cause

In Guruji’s teaching, karma is not a punishment handed down from outside. “Every action has an equal and opposite reaction. That is Prakriti,” he says, using the old word for Nature. “What you do does not go outside. The opposite comes back to you.”

What we do and think, good and bad, gathers first in the aura and then, little by little, settles on the energy centres. It does not arrive in a day. It accumulates through ordinary daily life, which is also why it can be worked on through ordinary daily practice.

The threads can be untied

If karma is that intimate, can it change at all? Here Guruji is precise. “There are threads of karma, layers. They can be disconnected.” But not by someone else: “That cannot be done by a Guru as a person. It is done by oneself. It is your karma.”

So what does the Guru do?

We give a shakti for you to untangle those layers, that web of maya. As you do it, day by day, they begin to dissolve.

The initiation gives the power. The practice is yours. And even then, Guruji says, it is never one person’s achievement: the grace of Shiva, of the Guru, and of the subtle Guru Mandala of the Siddha tradition all work together, “and it depends on each person’s own sadhana”.

Your good karma is never taken

One detail in his teaching is especially reassuring. When the practice works on karma, it works only on what troubles you. “The negative can be removed. There is no option to remove the positive, and no need. If you remove your merit, what is the use?” The good you have done keeps growing.

What you can do today

Not everything requires an initiation. Guruji’s everyday guidance is simple:

Do good karma. Practise. Live without grasping. Live a good life, and do not do things that trouble others. Doing that and practising, the layers are released on their own.

Be Siddha, which in his sense means complete: “If you eat, eat well. If you sleep, sleep perfectly. If you work, work perfectly. If you meditate, meditate perfectly. What else do you need in life?”

And look after the people who raised you. Of all the burdens a family can carry, he singles out the hurt of ageing parents who feel neglected. His advice fits in a single line: “Look after them like a child. That is all it means.”

Why a Guru, then?

If you must do the work yourself, why a Guru at all? Because, Guruji says, “the Guru is buddhi”, the inner intelligence that knows where to look, and a living Guru has already walked the way. Our deeper knowing, he says, is locked, and “your karma has put the lock on it. To release that karma, you need a Guru. That lock cannot be opened by just anyone.”

The Guru opens the door. You walk through it. At Spiritual Conscious this work is taught step by step, beginning with Siddha Meditation 1 and continuing in Siddha Meditation 2: Karmic Healing.
