Yā devī sarvabhūteṣu vṛttirūpeṇa saṃsthitā
Namastasyai namastasyai namastasyai namo namaḥ
That Devi who abides in all beings in the form of activity, instinct,
career and learning: salutations to Her, again and again.
To that Devi Shakti, present in every class of creature in the world in the forms of vritti (occupation, action, inner impulse, livelihood, daily work), our salutations, salutations, salutations.
Vritti, occupation, is an important and very broad part of our life.
Another meaning of vritti is earning, livelihood: growing in family life and in business, the systems that keep life going.
Many other activities are also called vritti. When you are engaged in the work of life, in business, in farming, when you hold a job or run an enterprise, it is the Adi Shakti who gives you the power to do it and makes it happen.
By the grace of Her power, the work of every occupation keeps expanding and growing.
Another meaning of vritti. The spiritual world is also a household, a samsara. So there is no need to leave family life for spirituality; you can practise spirituality while living in the world. In the Devi’s sutra, “vritti rupena samsthita” means you can meditate in a market, a bazaar or any shopping mall, and reach the state of samadhi.
In the same way you can meditate in the forest, in a palace, or in the sun.
Looking at this sutra, vritti is itself a form of the Devi’s power: occupation, action, inner impulse, manifestation. Yet while doing their work, people get confused. They think they must run away from their work, run away from business and trade, leave everything behind to gain everything, leave family life to meditate and practise. They create confusion for themselves.
But in the beautiful word vritti, the Devi Herself shines.
Without understanding this power, without doing family life, work and meditation properly, without understanding and without receiving inner inspiration, people get stuck and create confusion. Then an impulse arises suddenly (instantly) and they do some task at once, in a hurry. While doing that work, a deeper inclination is at work within the same task.
Because the power of inner inspiration within us pushes us from inside out. Whatever active power of inspiration there is, that too is the Devi’s power, filling us and working widely through us.
Example: when we want to go on a pilgrimage, an inspiration, an inclination, an interest arises. Just as we gain experience on such journeys out of love, so in our work we gain experience. Such experiences in the arts, in music, in business and in so many other occupations, and in the many forms of life, a life of experience moved by special inner inspiration that keeps going forward: that is what Adi Shakti means. So however far you go in life, however high you rise, however you gain experience and enjoy its bliss, the grace in all of it is the form of the Adi Shakti.
However much life unfolds through this, however far forward you walk, however much it blossoms and expands: all of it is the Devi’s power. In the same way, when we gain peace of soul through our awareness, its natural result is that every kind of duality (confusion) comes to an end.
Some people practise meditation. Many sit in temples, live in monasteries, in caves and ravines, or in the forest, and believe they are very spiritual. Other people may be engaged in all kinds of activity, doing many kinds of work, spread across many fields, enjoying comfort and wealth. Looking at them, people think they have very little spiritual knowledge. But once we understand the division between spiritual and worldly in terms of vritti and express our life, there is a power in it. The form of the Adi Shakti is there: the Mother power, the power of consciousness, working through such qualities. That power gives different people different thoughts and livelihoods. Each receives a different inner inspiration. Each walks a different road. That is why the world is so vast. No two people are alike. This is the Devi’s glory.
Example: when we see a devotee of the Devi, that person looks special, and we think of it as true devotion. Another devotee runs a big business, a factory, a company, or a large farm, and seeing them we think they are not a true devotee. But they too are a fine, intense, true devotee. They see the Devi’s power in the sense of vritti rupena. A very strong power is at work in them, widely. So setting aside all discrimination and being humble, everyone, is the special meaning of this sutra.
Many people in spirituality hold on to ego, and from there they divide life into family, business, social and spiritual. But this sutra says there are no divisions; the two are one. That is the sutra. Because the Devi’s power is everywhere, undivided, in every way: the action of a power that holds everything together, inspiration, activity, instinct, career and learning. So vritti rupena samsthita is a beautiful sutra.
Guruji’s original notes in Kannada, as he wrote them.
