Devi Stuti · Sutra 2 of 23
The Light of Consciousness
Chetana. Guruji on the verse that bows to the Devi as consciousness.
Yā devī sarvabhūteṣu cetanetyabhidhīyate
Namastasyai namastasyai namastasyai namo namaḥ
That Devi who is reflected in all beings as consciousness: salutations to Her, again and again.
This power of the Devi is reflected in every living creature in the form of consciousness. I bow, I bow, I bow, every time I bow.
The life force of every being is this Devi Shakti.
This living consciousness that expresses itself is the work of a great power inside us. Yet to see the Devi who is this power of consciousness, we travel far: to hilltops, caves, temples and idols, searching everywhere.
But the meaning of this sutra is that the divinity of that power is the one inside you.
When we notice this consciousness and join with it, when we connect with it mentally, beyond emotion and physically, at that very moment we receive the experience of the Devi, Her vision and Her grace.
Instead we only imagine some form of Her. The Durga Saptashati does describe the Devi’s forms, but the sutra says the Devi appears as an experience of the power of consciousness. Within us, the light of the Devi’s awareness, the power of Her flame, may at first be dim, then a little brighter, then intense, and finally perfectly radiant and crystal clear.
Our journey, though, must remain one journey. Then the work of the power of consciousness keeps expressing itself:
- from slow to moderate,
- from moderate to intense,
- from intense to the radiant experience of crystal clarity.
This experience is the power of Ma Durga.
No one can stop it; it is not possible for anyone to stop it. This is the power of maya. How could any illusion, any condition, any assumption, any belief, any sectarian conviction hold this power back? No one can restrain it.
What matters is only the path we walk. We must walk toward that power, and on the way there will be stones, thorns and dust. We must move them aside. Then comes the realisation of the Devi’s power.
Realisation of the Devi is in everyone, because what is inside us is that very Devi consciousness. But to see Her fully, we must first be subtle and in the present (pleasant and present).
The Devi is already hidden inside us, subtly, in the present moment. When we too, subtly and in the present, join with Her power, we receive Her complete vision.
Do not dismiss this as illusion or maya, or picture it through other imaginings. Those are just fancies of the mind.
The Durga Saptashati shows us many right paths of practice, and we have the chance to realise the Devi. But practice becomes real only when we connect with the state of that power. Otherwise there is no realisation and the practice is wasted. That is why the guidance and grace of a Guru are so important for experiencing the Devi.
Many people have a habit of fasting. The real meaning of upavasa is to stay close to that power and close to our own presence.
But when fasting means skipping food, our attention turns more toward the body. What we need is to centre our concentration on the power of consciousness. Eating is not about stuffing the stomach, then sleeping, dozing and growing heavy. A small, balanced amount of food is best.
Otherwise your vitality drops and the radiance of your body fades. So stay alert, stay lively and increase your vitality.
Some people, while keeping a vow, prepare tasty dishes and eat a little of everything; be relaxed, lively and joyful. But after the fast ends, eating everything in sight ruins your health, so be moderate.
True fasting is living in the presence of the divine power within you: staying close to the consciousness inside you and abiding in its radiant power. That is upavasa.
Guruji’s original notes in Kannada, as he wrote them.
(crystal clear)
(Pleasant & present)
