Tushti. Guruji on the verse that bows to the Devi as contentment.
Yā devī sarvabhūteṣu tuṣṭirūpeṇa saṃsthitā
Namastasyai namastasyai namastasyai namo namaḥ
That Devi who abides in all beings in the form of contentment and delight: salutations to Her, again and again.
To that Devi Shakti, present in every class of creature in the world in the forms of tushti, happiness and joy, our salutations, salutations, salutations.
Tushti means joy, happiness, satisfaction, contentment, delight.
What matters most for every human being is to find joy, to be happy, to be content in life and stay joyful. When life is fulfilled, people feel a kind of satisfaction. That is what tushti means: they are joyful and happy. They are glad that everything in their life is all right.
Those whose life has no joy and no happiness are afflicted by sorrow. Happiness is something undivided.
Some people say they are happy by nature, but some are full of envy, jealousy and hatred.
Because of this, many get caught in troubles and suffer them. In such people there is no cheerfulness or joy, no contentment or delight. They are not satisfied. They do not find happiness. Yet they keep trying to find joy, searching for it, searching for opportunities. Their minds sink into depression. Without clarity, they keep thinking: I must get something, I must get this, I must get that; if I get all this I will be joyful.
Everyone says we should be happy, but when happiness does not come, people just sit and brood that they did not get it. They become selfish and greedy.
Happiness, tushti, delight: all of this is a power that brings about the evolution of completeness in human life. So the grace of the Adi Shakti fills us with the power that brings contentment to the natural course of growth in life.
Example: look at a small child, and we notice how joyful, happy and delighted that child is, bound up in contentment.
Because the child does not yet know the false future ahead. There are no false beliefs in their mind, and they do not yet know the veil of how to put on a masked personality.
So, just as their mind is, children play in one way or another, make a noise and stay happy and deeply content.
As they slowly grow up and the mind develops, they take on ego in the inner mind and inner personalities. When that inner personality is filled with confusion and not properly ordered, through misunderstanding and the confusions of the inner mind, the person is not content but discontent.
Content and discontent are both meaningful states. Where there is contentment, tushti, there is a way to complete an effort through the practice of completeness. We must complete it and not leave it incomplete. We must attain perfection in it. Because the sutra says that in every class of creature the Adi Shakti shines in the form of tushti.
So every being, in its own life, according to its own work and experience, entering every expanse of life where it can achieve this, with a fixed aim and a fixed goal, should let its existence change and walk the good path in happiness.
Then your aim, your goal, reveals itself stage by stage, and you create each situation with happiness, joy and waves of bliss from the inner mind, and stay blissful.
Example: when you meet a friend or a loved one after a long time, you feel joy, happiness and bliss. Everyone should enter that state of joy, show that contentment, and simply stay in that power.
We have a habit of not letting ourselves reach the state of happiness. We do not let ourselves come close or even talk properly. Influenced by the systems around us, by religion, by composure, by ethics, rules and ideologies, a person keeps his distance. So set all of that aside: we need happiness, we need tushti.
Otherwise you will be discontent. Your life will be incomplete and full of sorrow. So be content and find happiness. Through this, everyone should become whole and walk the journey of completeness. We need the completeness of knowledge. We must walk that path: the path of completeness in practice, the path of the completeness of the Supreme, the path of the vision of the Divine. So everyone should enter their own path of satisfaction, contentment, delight and tushti. Because on every path the grace of the Adi Shakti, in the form of tushti, delights us in every way, and that Adi Shakti is the Mother power.
So we should dive into the lap of the Mother power like a child. When we dive in, the Mother power embraces us, caresses us, comforts us, gives us satisfaction and contentment, and shows us the good path. She gives grace, she gives love, and she takes us by the hand and leads us.
Guruji’s original notes in Kannada, as he wrote them.
